The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) is a Federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces in high schools across the United States. The program was originally created as part of the National Defense Act of 1916 and later expanded under the 1964 ROTC Vitalization Act. The purpose for JROTC is to teach students:
· Developing good citizenship and patriotism
· Developing self-reliance, leadership, and responsiveness to constituted authority.
· Improving the ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.
· Developing an appreciation of the importance of physical fitness.
· Increasing a respect for the role of the U.S Armed Forces in support of national objectives.
· Developing knowledge of team building skills and basic military skills.
Taking 3-4 years of the course allows the cadets to instantly rank higher if they pursue a military career.The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) program South Philadelphia High School is ran by two people who play a major part is the program, Sgt. Mack and Sgt. Astrillo. Jrotc teaches you a lot that can prepare you for the future. Jrotc teaches you a lot about the seven values. Jrotc also teaches you a lot about leadership. The seven values are Loyalty, Respect, Honor, Duty, Selfless Service, and integrity. Loyalty is when you never turn you back on anyone. It’s also when you keep you promises to everyone. Respect is when you treat people the way you would want to be treated. Honor is when you are proud of where you come from you represent who you are and what you stand for. Duty is to fulfill your obligations as a person, and be all you can be. Selfless Service is when you do something for others without expecting anything in return. Integrity is to do the right thing without anyone expecting it because it’s the right thing to do.
